How to keep a conversation going (without trying too hard)
Share
Starting a conversation is one thing. Keeping it going is where people sometimes freeze up. The good news: it's less about what you say and more about being curious.
Ask one more question
The easiest trick there is. Whatever they say, ask about it. "I just got back from Austin" becomes "What did you get up to?" Follow-up questions show you're listening, and they keep the conversation moving.
Share a little too
A conversation is a back-and-forth. After they answer, add something of your own: "I've always wanted to try that" or "Same, I'm a waffle fry person." It gives them something to ask you about.
Follow their energy
Notice when someone lights up. That's the topic they love, so stay there. People remember the person who let them talk about their favorite thing.
Use what's around you
The place you're in is full of things to talk about. The food, the music, the dog that just walked past. Shared moments make easy topics.
Don't fear a pause
A little quiet is normal. Take a sip of coffee, smile, and pick up a thread from earlier: "So how long have you been running?"
End on a high
When it's time to go, say so warmly: "This was great, I hope I see you next week." Leaving on a good note makes the next conversation easier.
