Austin run clubs: where to find your people
Share
Austin loves to run. Between Lady Bird Lake, the hills and the year-round sunshine, there's a group run happening almost every day of the week, and most of them are free.
The best part isn't even the run. It's the coffee, tacos and chat afterwards.
Where to start
- Run Austin, the nonprofit behind the Austin Marathon, runs free group runs and training through the year.
- Shop and brand run clubs. Running stores and sportswear shops around town host weekly group runs, often on weeknights, open to every pace.
- Early morning crews. Groups like Rise and Run ATX meet before work several days a week.
- Coffee shop and brewery runs. Lots of clubs start and finish at a café or brewery, so there's a natural place to hang out after.
Running app and events listings (like SweatPals and Do512) are a good way to see what's on this week.
Times and places change, so check before you go.
Your first run club, made easy
- Every pace is welcome. Most clubs have a few distances and someone happy to run at the back.
- Arrive a few minutes early. It's the easiest time to say hi.
- Stay for the after part. That's where friendships start.
- Go back next week. The second time, people will remember you.
The question you'll hear
Runners love talking about running. Wear the RUN hat to the coffee shop after and you'll hear it: "Wait, which run club?" It's not more gear. It's the one you'll wear every day, everywhere but the run.
